The fourth types of files are also primarily non-compressible types. Although, because they come already compressed, they can be compressed. One example of a non-compressible file is a Microsoft Office Excel file. The reason is that there is a lot of data in the file, and the data can't be compressed any more. Therefore, if a person were to put a Microsoft Excel file into a Zip archive, it would stay the same size.
The final common problem is the inefficiency of zip compression. The problem is that Zip compression runs over and over in an ongoing fashion, trying to make the least possible changes to all the archived files. This has a tendency to create very large files. For example, when you archive the work file "Microsoft Excel" with the Zip compression option checked, your work file will be converted to a 576MB file, even though, at the time of archive, the work file contained only 12 KB of data. The newly created file will take about the same size as a 1.4 MB Word 2000 document. If you changed the work file a little bit, you will still get the very large Zip file.
Zip compression also happens in the compressed files. For example, when you archive, the work file with the Zip compression option checked will create a new file that is 80% the size of the original file, and then compress the new file to zip. Because the file is so large, it will also reduce the size of the work file a little bit.
I can not really recommend that people use these options to archive documents unless they have a really good reason. If I am archiving documents, I do it with the "lzma" option set. That way, my archived files don't get very large, and the files are compatible with the newer version of Zip compression. d2c66b5586
