Every year, I think of the film ‘ Dil Deke Dekho ’ which is the only Hindi movie I remember seeing in my childhood. It’s an old school movie, a very innocent movie. It was a dream for every Indian girl in those days. It’s sweet, it’s romantic, and it has all the ingredients of a girl’s romance.
The day of the shoot was full of interruptions. The director was late and Shammi was a little over-enthusiastic. He had been working in this film for quite some time and wanted to make sure that I was completely comfortable. He was at his best, always alert and smiling.
It was a small room and he started to tell me how he was impressed with my work and how he liked the way I had handled my role in Dil Deke Dekho. He was so sweet in his words. He said that I was a little dark girl who could do really well. He also told me about a girl from Austria who could sing very well but had no acting ability. He said he had seen this girl in a couple of movies and she was very good. He said she was from Austria and was very good. I didn't know what to think!
The blog explores the idea of the lack of improvisation in film-making and what can be done to make it happen. The hero of the blog is, of course, Krishna Dharmasena, the man who made movies, some of them very famous, like Kadhalan (1961) and Aaytha Ezhu (1963).
Shammi went on to make movies like Sajan Tumko Main (1960), Teree Sang Likhan (1961), An Evening Without Ani (1962) and Hum Sab Ek Hai (1968). Sajan Tumko Main was the first film that he directed. Shammi did this on a very small budget as he had to raise Rs 2 lakhs for that movie.
Fortunately, I was chosen. After Dil Deke Dekho, I did the family drama Amar Akbar Anthony (1960) with Shammi. I didn't get on with Shammi. I never really got on with any of his characters. I only got on with the characters I played. I could never quite understand Anari (1964) and Anhonee (1964) and Naseeb (1965) and Main Aur Mrs Kisan (1966). I also didn't like Chori Chori (1967). I didn't get on with Shammi and he couldn't get on with me. Sadhna and I had split up by this time. I preferred Shammi's company to that of any of his actors. He was my friend. He would be very accommodating to the newcomer. So I didn't feel that I was in any way restricted in my performance or lack of confidence as I didn't count as an actor. I was fortunate to have made two films with Shammi. 827ec27edc
