As Bombay was bombarded by Admiral Dyer in the aftermath of the 1892 massacre, the city witnessed the first public rally in support of the struggle. Britishers were appalled and writhed with horror at the details of the event and the footage shows Dyer hanging the women and children at the mercy of the law. This inspired Edward Thompson to compose the song "Not Guilty".
In the 1970s and 1980s the anti-Independence movement for an independent Manipur became the voice of many of the marginalised and rural population. Behan Sanakok Kangto, by Irabot Sangai and Kangjol Haikhom, by K.K. Bishnu features the music and lyrics written by Airouba Lailong. It is a reworked version of the chorus of the de-facto national anthem of India - Jana Gana Mana.
National independence is an interesting phenomenon. More than two-thousands years ago, the ancient Greeks were colonizing/conquering other countries by force of arms despite holding each other in reverence. We live in an era of peace now, with various kinds of neighborhood nation-states in the world around modern day India and a world wide Nation-State that still has its champions. Nationalism flourishes despite our imperfections (one of the very reasons of its existence) and most of the politicians in India are acclaimed to be nationalists. They may not be propagating the concept on a large scale, but it exists far from the large cities.
Kangjol Haikhom, the unofficial de-facto national anthem of Manipur, was composed as a protest song and is being attributed by many to A.R. Rahman, a contemporary musical genius. It refers to the independence struggle of Manipur and the unfair suppression of the people of Manipur by the Britishers. The song is sung both in Manipuri and English. The Manipuri lyrics are written by A. Kabi and the English lyrics are written by Sangai. The song was composed on a guitar by renowned Indian pop guitar player, A. R. Rahman and singer Geeteshwari Sharma. d2c66b5586
