What are the three states of matter?
There is a wikipedia article for the three states of matter.
Does anyone have a good explanation to the states of matter from a physics perspective? What are the three different states of matter that the article talks about?
A:
From a physics perspective, the three states of matter are:
Solid
Liquid
Gas
A liquid is a mass of molecules that are bonded to each other through a potential well, and whose motion is a combination of random Brownian motion (random walk) with a velocity that depends on the molecules' local environment.
A gas is a mass of molecules that are bonded to each other through a short range potential, and whose molecules have no net motion relative to each other.
A solid is not quite a liquid nor a gas, but it is somewhat intermediate between the two. In a solid, the molecules are "bonded" to each other by the attractive forces of the crystal lattice, so the molecules do not move relative to each other, but the forces are not short range.

I think a better, intuitive explanation is that solids are rigid (do not change shape on a molecular level), liquids are not (change shape), and gases are loosely connected (don't want to be at one place or another).
An example of the behaviour of fluids is when you fill a cup with water. It will change shape as you pour the water out, but it does not want to exit the cup. It is however very easy to pour the water out from the cup, as you can just let the water run out (as opposed to using a special utensil to get the water out).
For solids, they are not really rigid. A piece of ice floats in water, the water does not want to be at one location but can be pushed around by the ice (if ice is smaller than the water). The water does not want to float on the ice though. For gases, the molecules do not want to be at one place or another, but can be at a particular location because they can diffuse (go from one location to another) easily.
The article does not explain it very well (at least to my ear). Sorry.

A superficial summary of the Wikipedia article would be:
