Already a big fan of Satyadev Kancharana, I had been following up on his work as a lead actor, and was excited to watch him in a leading role. I loved the movie, Kancharana delivered a great performance, and you can tell from the trailer that the film is a refreshing change from the usual Bollywood, Tamil and Telugu film fare. It’s a complete understated effort, consisting of only one man and four life-size actors. And it’s really not much more than that. The film has a handful of plot twists, but they are largely kept under wraps until the film is done. It’s not a background story, it’s not just a dramatic sequence – it’s full-on heist. It’s a charming film, the script is adorable, the songs are catchy, the visuals are awesome and the one to one pairing works. The only real problem is that the film is short (less than two hours) and it’s a little too simple. Thankfully, it doesn’t take itself too seriously, and it’s that simplicity that keeps it from getting pretentious. It’s a very light-hearted crime caper, and I liked that about it. The film is primarily about earnest criminals who try to do good and get caught. The film is often tense, and I think it works to the film’s advantage. The premise of the film is a little confusing, but it’s not too surprising, and it doesn’t feel like it’s too hard to understand. It’s also not hard to follow, and there’s a lot of fun to be had in the narrative. It’s a good formula, especially with Kancharana, and I like that the film stays so light and easy-going. He is a guy you can’t help but like, and I was glad that the film played up his likable guy side. It’s easy to see what the film is trying to do, but it’s a little hard to appreciate the film for what it is. Some of the narrative choices feel a little forced, and I think the scenes that are supposed to be serious start out to be a little, well, not-so-serious.
