The Campus Agreement currently allows Cornell University staff, faculty, and affiliates* to download selected Microsoft Windows desktop operating systems and install them on computers owned by Cornell University and its affiliated institutions at no cost. Computers must have been initially purchased with a licensed version of Microsoft Windows operating system to qualify. Students, retirees, and alumni are not covered by the Campus Agreement, and are not authorized to download software covered by the Agreement.
While Windows 8 and 8.1 are still supported by Microsoft and are covered by our license, many applications are no longer supported on Windows 8. We strongly recommend upgrading any Windows 8.x machine to Windows 10. If you have a specific need to install Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 onto a Cornell-owned computer, please contact us.
Professional Edition is covered under our site license, but is not currently recommended for use on Cornell-owned computers. Enterprise Edition provides a higher level of integration for managed desktop, BitLocker drive encryption, and other IT administration tools. If you have a special need for a Professional Edition of Windows 11 or Windows 10, please contact CU Software.
To take advantage of our Windows license, new computers must be purchased with a factory-installed (OEM) installation of Windows. For departmental purchases of new computers, we recommend that you buy the least expensive Windows version offered (for example, Windows 10 Home). Upon receipt, you can then upgrade your computer to Windows 10 Enterprise at no cost to your department.
Under WindowsOn a computer whose primary OS is Windows, the Campus Agreement allows installation of Windows on an unlimited number of virtual machines (VMs), as long as the computer originally came with a licensed version of Windows.
Purdue negotiates the availability of several software packages for student installation on personally owned machines through University sponsorship or at a reduced cost. Eligibility for the software below depends on requirements outlined within the product's software licensing agreement between vendor and Purdue University. Active student registration with the University is required.
Norton IS compatible with the M1 ARM chips per this post. HoweverThe VM and the host OS both require a seperate install of Norton to protect both. The issue I see is with the pre-release of Windows 11 which Norton parallels itself may not see as a supported OS.
I am running Windows 11 build 22471.1000 updated as of Oct 9. This comes from the Windows Insider program per the instructions provided by Parallels. I had a licensed copy of Windows 10 running in Parallels on my previous Mac (Intel) but Windows 10 would not install into Parallels on my M1 Mac. I am trying to determine how to go about installing the released version of Windows 11 and applying my Windows 10 license, all without screwing up my currently functioning system.
BTW, I have been corresponding with Microsoft Support and they have been somewhat responsive. They have never used the party line that Mac M1 chip is not supported. In fact, the customer support person actually recommended that I install Windows on my Mac as an alternate boot system, which I declined. My only issue with Microsoft is that Windows 11 is a free upgrade to Windows 10 license holders. But the caveat is that in order to get the free upgrade you need to be running Windows 10 and upgrade from there. I cannot install Windows 10 on my new Mac so I am probably stuck paying for Windows 11.
Some software is intended for academic use only. It is the user's responsibility to read and comply with the license agreement for each software title, regarding remote access or personal use of the software.
Of course, you'll need Parallels Desktop and Windows 10 in order to download and install them. Parallels Desktop costs $80 for a standard license. The Pro Edition and Business Edition are both $100 per year. You can either buy a full license right now, or start with the free two-week trial and make your full purchase later.
You'll also need a copy of Windows 10. You might already have a license or you might need to buy a copy. You can load Windows 10 right from within Parallels Desktop and you'll be up and running as soon as the installation is complete.
To run Windows 11 on your M1 Mac, you will have to download and install Parallels Desktop 17 app from its official website. The app comes with a 14-day free trial, after which you will have to get its paid version to use it. The app costs $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99 for the Pro Edition. For most users, a standard license will be enough. That said, you should check the feature comparison chart on the official website to see which edition is best suited for your needs.

To actually use Windows 11 in the virtual machine you need to read and accept a few more agreements relating to data privacy. These are fairly standard legalese, but you should read them to know what you're getting into by using this software.
After accepting these privacy agreements, Windows 11 will open Microsoft Edge and display the Parallels 18 splash screen, indicating you have successfully installed Windows. There's actually some useful information on this page so let's take a look at a few of the helpful hints.
Check out our software catalog to explore different software packages offered by OIT. Please note that each software agreement contains its own terms and conditions. Many software packages are available for use on both personal and University-owned computers; however, only University computers should be used for University business. Generally, use of campus-wide software is limited to University business, academic, or research related purposes.
Please check with your academic or administrative department to determine if there is additional software available to you. Any software not listed in the Software Catalog or not available to you otherwise must be purchased in accordance with UA Purchasing Guidelines. Software providers often times require a licensing agreement to use the associated software. All agreements should be submitted to Contract Management for appropriate review and authorized signature per Contract Guidelines and Contract Submittal. If you are pursuing a new software as a service implementation, please submit a Project Request Form early in the process to seek project management and implementation assistance.
Departments interested in new campus-wide or larger volume licensing agreements should contact the IT Service Desk to express interest. OIT will work with campus units to evaluate and pursue these agreements. 153554b96e
