WMC7 TV Recording Schedule Backup Fixed

WMC reports I have over 400 series scheduled right now; a great many of these are duplicates (I inadvertently restored backups twice the last time I reinstalled and never bothered to fix it; also the usual cruft that accumulates when working around issues with corrupt guide data here and there over the years). Still, as a rough guess, I'd say there are somewhere between 150 and 200 unique series, many not currently airing (off season or end of run) and quite a few scheduled to record in the next day or so - I really don't want to dedicate hours to slogging through the XML backups entering them manually!
You reference a backup database when the guide database in Windows Media Center is corrupted. If you set a manual recording on a channel that is not listed in the backup database, the Mcupdate.exe process crashes.
I ran into an interesting problem the other day which warranted some investigation: I was replacing the computer which my dad uses for Windows Media Center, (which he uses as his DVR and to watch movies), and he had an elaborate recording schedule set up for all of his favorite shows and wish lists. The problem for me - as his IT guy - was to figure out how to migrate his recording schedule from his old computer to his new computer, and as it turns out - there was already a command line solution from Microsoft which was pretty easy to use.
Note: The \"yyyymmdd_hhmmss\" file is an XML file which contains your recording schedule, and you can find detailed information about the data in the file in the Windows Media Center Guide Listings Format article which I mentioned earlier.
Windows Media Center (WMC) keeps its recording schedule (i.e. series to record) in XML format in the following directory: C:\\ProgramData\\Microsoft\\eHome\\mcepg2-0\\backup\\recordings. I have attached a sample.
Its schedule recording feature allows starting the task of screen capturing automatically. You don't have to control the duration manually as the screen recorder can set the starting and ending times. It's functional to capture live TV shows at home. Sometimes you may miss the live TV, but you can capture it for later viewing.
The Windows Media Center is the key entertainment feature on Windows 7 that enables its users to record TV shows, schedule recording sessions and watch the recorded videos from desktop and laptop computers. However, the Windows Media Center is not on the list of built-in features on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, but the software can be easily purchased and downloaded from the Microsoft's website.
After you have determined your signal strength and connection you are ready to start recording. I use the Side Bar Web Guide for most of the scheduled recording. It is easy and does not require WMC to be open.
Create your own personal Digital Video Recorder! Record cable TV or ATSC digital TV shows to disk with MPEG-2. Use the WinTV-Scheduler to schedule the recordings of your favorite analog or ATSC digital TV programs. Play the recordings back to your PC screen at any time.
Media Center uses TV tuner devices to play back and record TV shows from standard antenna, cable or satellite signals. Users can record television programs manually or schedule recording via the electronic program guide. Recordings can be burned to Video DVD or, barring copy restrictions, be transferred to a portable media player. Media Center supports both analog and digital tuners and allows up to 4 of each tuner type [Analog, Digital OTA, Clear QAM, Cable Card] for a possible total of 16 TV tuners to be configured. All the tuners use the same guide data but it can be edited and configured to include additional channels such as Clear QAM not found or included in most Titan Guides. While watching live television, the program keeps a buffer that allows users to rewind or pause live TV, allowing users to skip commercials. (A third party program MCEbuddy allows automatic commercial skipping on recorded programs.)
Have you ever been away from home and suddenly realized you forgot to record your favorite program Now Windows 7 Media Center, users can schedule recordings remotely from their phones or mobile devices with Remote Potato.
Perhaps the coolest feature of Remote Potato is the ability to schedule recording from your phone or mobile device. Note: For any devices or computers without Silverlight, you will be prompted to view the HTML page.
WMC has not been able to add (or run) a \"ScheduledRecording\" task in years and I can't figure out why. The last time the task was created on its own was nearly four years ago (the same time I created my bat files) and the task never ran. I had to Take Ownership of the Task just to delete it, and even after doing so, WMC has yet to recreate it (even though I have recordings scheduled in it.)
So if you pick individual episodes the archiving will happen immediately. It runs in a background process. If you are recording a series and a new episode is recorded it will archive after it finishes recording. I wish you could schedule it, however there are no options to do this.
The Live TV Guide is a handy addition to the theater app, and with the Emby DVR, you can schedule TV recordings. Emby also has some handy plug-ins such as Cover Art, which you can enhance media images with, and GameBrowser that enables game support.
OTA broadcasts actually contain guide data. In the UK, DVB-T (terrestrial) channels contain a week of completely free in-band guide data. Alas, our North American ATSC broadcasts contain only several hours of data, but NextPVR can utilize that data if desired (whereas WMC cannot), which might be sufficient for time-shifting purposes but obviously not for elaborate recording schedules.
The lack of interest in this topic has more to do with the rise of Netflix and similar online services than with Microsoft abandoning WMC - in fact Microsoft was merely going with the flow IMO. Growing numbers of people rarely watch \"linear\" TV. so why should they bother with special hardware and software, recording schedules, etc Just get TV shows and movies online whenever you like (for a fee).
Install SichboPVR4 on multiple PCs throughout your home and they can all stream live TV or schedule recordings on your central SichboPVR4 TV server. You can also set up accounts so that each family member can have their own favourites or access the server remotely over the internet.
Recording live TV in Windows 8.1 is possible with the proper equipment. It is also possible to schedule recordings. However, you will need to buy some additional hardware and set up everything manually. The whole process is explained in this guide.
