The specific model/vintage of Mercruiser Marine Engines can be determined by looking at the last letters of the engine code which is stamped in all complete Marine Longblocks by General Motors at the time of assembly. If the serial number and/or model decals are missing, the Marine Engine code will help to determine the engine model. Refer to the drawing below for the specific engine code location on your Mercruiser Engine.

Find the right parts for your Mercury or MerCruiser engine here. Search by serial number to see detailed engine diagrams and part numbers, then contact your local authorized Mercury Marine dealer to place your order. You can also browse by model, but we strongly recommend using your serial number to ensure you find the correct parts.
Every marine engine has a serial number that should be easily identifiable on the engine. In some cases they can be corroded off or hard to read, or the sticker is missing. With all the different makes and models it can be confusing to know where to look.
The serial numbers on Onan generators are usually located on the port side of the front casing. On older model they can be found on top of the electrical box, or near the electrical windings in sticker form.
Mercury OutboardsThe serial number tag is located on the SWIVEL BRACKET (port or starboard); or, check the INSTRUCTION PLATE, located between the thumb screws above the steering tube.
Force Casting NumberThe cast number is located under the ignition plate on the starboard side of the block, beside the top bypass cover. The cast number will be either a six-digit number ending in 010 or a number starting with either 800 or 818, ending with C, then a number. For example: 800-153-C6.
The serial number is a unique identifier of your product and the key to efficient servicing and correct ordering of parts. It can be found on decals and product plates as described below. For the exact appearance and location on your product, please see the operators manual.
The information decal is usually located on the engine cover or other flat surface that is easy to see. It lists the identification numbers for the engine and also for the drive unit or reverse gear. The appearance may vary depending on the engine model and year of production. See examples below.
The engine as well as the drive unit or reverse gear has a product plate with the identification numbers. The engine plate is located on the engine block. The appearance may vary depending on the model and year of production. See examples below.
3 CYL of L# Powerheads: Please provide the cast number for 70, 75, 80, and 90 HP powerheads built between 1987 and 2002. This number is located on the starboard side of the block next to the number 3 CYL. Example: 877 - 8946 - C7
6 CYL, V6 or 3.0 litre Powerheads: Please provide cubic inch (122, 142, or 153) or litre (2.4, 2.5, 3.0). Also provide the cast number. This number located on the starboard side of the block where the two halves of the block come together. Example: 885 - 9811 - C4
Super Duty big-block: The Ford Super Duty big-block engine was a truck-specific big-block that was introduced in 1958 alongside the FE and MEL, and lasted through 1982. It came in 401 cubic-inch, 477 cubic-inch, and 534 cubic-inch variants and is much less common in the performance realm.
Big-Block Ford: More correctly referred to as the Ford 385 engine, after the factory 3.85-inch crankshaft stroke, this is the engine referred to when someone references a big-block Ford, or BBF. It was debuted in 1968 and sold through 1997. The BBF came primarily in two sizes, the 429 cubic-inch and 460 cubic-inch versions, with a rare small-bore, 370-cube version in 1978.
Engine casting numbers are identifying marks manufacturers create on the block or head of an engine. These numbers are in the die cast mold and are part of each engine the mold produces. Using the casting number ensures selection of the correct parts.
Block casting numbers are not always easy to find. Sometimes grease or grime could be covering them and you might have to clean a part of the block before you can be able to see them. These numbers are also hard to read when the engine is still in the vehicule/boat. You could try using a mirror if the casting number is located in an area that is hard to see or reach.
For CHEVY engines, the block casting number is usually located on a ledge found at the rear of the block and has 6 to 8 digits. This ledge is located near the bellhousing. Sometimes the last three digits of the block casting number are cast into the block on the side. The most important numbers in a casting number are the last 3 digits.
S&S serial numbers begin with the following manufacturing year codes. Year codes coincide with S&S Cycle's fiscal year, which starts October 1 of the previous calendar year. A product with serial number beginning with the letter \"A\" was manufactured in fiscal year 1978, between 10/1/1977 and 9/30/1978. \"A\" was reused in the year 2000.
1 = Chevrolet 9 = 1969 F = Flint, Michigan 123456 = Matches the last 6 numbers of the VIN of the vehicle the engine was installed in.
The Engine Code is located near the Vin number on the machined boss at the front passenger side of the block. Some Truck or Marine blocks may have the codes stamped on the flat block just above the timing cover.
The first letter of the code designates the assembly factory. The numbered 2nd and 3rd digits represent the month and the 4th and 5th indicate the day of the assembly. The last 2 or 3 digits are the Engine Suffix code which designates the vehicle type or model the engine was installed in.
The casting number consists of 6, 7, or 8 digits without any letters. Any letters cast near the 6,7 or 8 digit number are not part of the Casting number. The Block Casting Number designates veries information of the block such as the displacement, the year of production, 2 or 4 bolt main, and also vehicle application.
The Block Casting Number is located at the back ledge of the block behind the driver-side cylinder head. However, on some later production blocks, the casting number may be located on the passenger side ledge.
The Engine Block Date Code indicates the month, date, and year the engine block was cast. The Date Code does not indicate the day the engine was assembled. The engine assembly date is indicated in the Engine Code located in the front of the block.
