"Another part of our work to protect people is warning patients about the amount of radiation they are being exposed to before they get a PET scan, CT scan, or x-ray. People need to learn about their exposure before they get a medical scan, and we’re calling on manufacturers to include it on their products and on healthcare facilities and device suppliers to post the labels on the parts they sell," FDA Medical Device Safety Coordinator Edward F. Henrich told the Wall Street Journal.
This new mandatory labeling rules applies to all manufacturers and suppliers of nuclear medicine and CT equipment, and were reportedly designed to cut radiation exposure in half for children and the elderly, according to the Wall Street Journal. These new rules will officially be implemented at the end of June.
As reported by Reuters, Sharp Healthcare USA Medical Imaging released a statement apologizing for the problems caused by the new label. "It is our sincere hope that viewing the labels and/or realizing the risks of harmful radiation exposure will help everyone understand the importance of proper radiologic imaging methods and that there are simple ways to reduce patients’ exposure."
