Overall, the performance, build quality, and sharpness of the Nikon 400mm f/2.8G VR II lens is quite good, especially at f/2.8, and it will be a good option for many photographers, especially those who are looking for a versatile and affordable long-range lens.
The 600mm f/4G VR II is the best of the bunch and may be the most practical choice if you need the power of a 600mm lens for landscapes. I could not get my hands on the 600mm f/4G VR II, but I used a 600mm f/4E, which is similar to the 600mm f/4G VR II, and found it very similar in performance and quality. The only difference I noticed between the 600mm f/4E and 600mm f/4G VR II was in terms of vignetting. The 600mm f/4E has a tiny amount of vignetting, which makes it even better for landscape work, but it is not visible even with a 50mm lens.
I tested the 600mm f/4G VR II on the Nikon D3s and D3x with my Nikon TCs, without any changes in bokeh or sharpness. Performance was excellent at all focal lengths. The only difference was that the focus was very slow to acquire and not as fast as the 200-400mm f/4. It's better, but not for everyone.
Here's what my experience was: The 200-400mm f/4 is sharper, it has better color balance and superior bokeh, even though it has less than half the zoom range. It is also a little smaller and lighter than the 300mm, which makes it more comfortable to carry around. But this smaller size and weight also make it less portable (has to be mounted on a tripod, even in VR mode to be handheld).
It's also compatible with almost all of the Nikon G-System camera bodies, including the Nikon 1 J1 and Nikon 1 AW1, which means it can be used on almost all of the Nikon 1 cameras, besides the Nikon 1 J2, Nikon 1 J3, Nikon 1 V2 and Nikon 1 V3. It's not compatible with the Nikon 1 AW2 and Nikon 1 AW3 (since the Nikon 1 AW2 and Nikon 1 AW3 only have a DX sensor), but it can be used on the Nikon 1 camera systems. 827ec27edc
