The following is taken from the Bhagavad Gita. Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa -at least - was the first person to translate the Bhagavad Gita into English. The Bhagavad Gita is in the form of a conversation between God Krishna (Krishna = God), and His devotee Arjuna (a great warrior, a devotee of Krishna and a human being). The conversation is usually referred to as the Bhagavad Gita and Arjuna is referred to as Arjuna. The conversation ensues after the war between the Pandavas (meaning ‘the sons of Pandu’) and the Kauravas or Kuru (meaning ‘the sons of the cowherd’). The Pandavas and Kauravas are cousins. The Kauravas were the ruling dynasty at Kurukshetra and the Pandavas were the ruling dynasty at Indraprastha in the North. The battle of Kurukshetra was fought as a result of a dispute between Arjuna (the Pandava) and his brother Bhima (a Kaurava) over the kingdom. It was the epic battle of the Mahabharata war. Krishna is the Avatar of God Vishnu, who is the Supreme Being. He appears in many forms to guide and aid people. Krishna is also Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa – meaning the one who revealed the Bhagavad Gita – he is one of many poets known by the same name. His son was Vyasa. Vyasa is also known as Narayana (another name of Krishna).

These teachings of the Vedas, Bhagavad-gita and other scriptures in Sanskrit, provided the basic religious and social values, customs and rituals. The Agamas codify these values, customs and rituals. They are of two kinds-one is the ritualistic and the other the philosophical.

Agamas are of two kinds-one is that of ritual, such as the Linga-Griha-Vahana-Nidhi; the other is that of philosophy, such as the Patanjala Yoga Sutras, Manushyastra, Sankhya-Yoga, Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavad Purana, Mandukya Upanishad, Agamamedha Upanishad and Markandeya Purana. The last 10 texts are all in Sanskrit.
