To my understanding you're free to use them in your engine as you see fit, beyond the permissibility of commercial use as defined by the UIGA, as long as you don't make a change to their copyright. (I don't know if that's the case or not.) Do you agree with that? Do I have the right to use these books commercially?
Ok, so as promised, I thought I'd post my reasoning for not trying the John Birch Chess Book (or any of the other books you posted). What I've noticed is that most of the problems are unrelated to the opening book itself which does have some problems. The issues I've found with them have to do with either the number or the stupidity of the questions.
The problems I ran into was related to the balance of the questions and the answers -simply finding the "correct" answer. This I see as a good thing, since problems of this nature are best solved by bringing in the human element. This is a key difference between teaching chess to machines versus humans. AI's are almost always programmed to answer the question, when a real person will answer the question, but with less error.
I have the Dann Corbit (SuperBook) book, so I think I'm use to that format for now, but I haven't installed Arena on my last PC and only just got it on this one. If that version of Arena comes with the same book in abk format, that'll be good. If that's not it, then I have to get the version of Arena that has the file and use that version to create an abk file.
If you can think of anything that will help, let me know. If you think Houdini can use an engine-specific opening book, let me know. Try testing it out and see how it runs. Also please join Houdini Community forum #2. d2c66b5586
