Al-Masudi does not specifically claim that al-Balagha is the work of Ali, but claims that it is attributed to Ali as the most famous and encompassing of his collections, since it is the most widely read of all the works attributed to him. Al-Masudi includes al-Balagha in his list of works under the heading of literature attributed to Ali, though it is not mentioned by its own name but in conjunction with other works. This is why some scholars call it Nouh al-Jil (lit. \"New Collection\"). Unlike other works by al-Sharif in which he gives the exact sources he used, al-Masudi says more generally that it is \"a book containing among others the sayings, letters, and explanations by Ali: It can be included in the handbooks of eloquence (nama' al-nujal), though it is not the most important.\"
Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya, a seventeenth century Sunni scholar, describes al-Masudi as a legend who perpetuated the views of Shia regarding the authenticity of Nahj al-Balagha. And the historians, al-Dhahabi and Ahmad al-Buni, have noted the use of the same sources by al-Sharif (whom al-Buni and al-Dhahabi ascribe to Kufa) and al-Masudi (whom al-Dhahabi would state belongs to his time and place). On the other hand, al-Buni notes:
The manuscript of Nahj al-Balagha was written in Arabic and was copied in 1094 (576 AH) by al-Khwarizmi in the diwan (library) of the Ziyarat-e Madrasa (r.a).[7] Nahj al-Balagha is now kept as part of the historical collection (history of Persian and Arabic Literature) of the Jame-e Mar'ashi (r.a) in Qom, Iran, and is usually dated to 1071 (566 AH).[8]
During the reign of Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, the caliph's vizier Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr had created the office of 'alem (see also mufti or ayatollah) and was so horrified at the examples and conduct of the caliphs in the time of Abubacer that he took the matter in hand and compiled two books, one of which was entitled 'Kitāb al-sīra al-mu'āniya fī 'l-mu'āniya (or 'The Book of the Faults of the nation').[2] Both the 'Book of Faults of the nation' and the 'Book of Nahj al-Balagha' were compiled by Ibn Zubayr and were circulated during the early Abbasid Period in Baghdad, as well as in other parts of the Muslim world.[3]The Shi'ites used the book to criticize the caliphs, while the Sunnis used the book to criticize the Shi'ites.''[4] d2c66b5586
