Fast, funny, bizarre, with a most unlikely hero and a picaresque plot unfolding in a surreal landscape? You are in for a treat. The idea is simple: 13-year-old sniper Oskari tells his younger sister, Jenny, that he has arranged to take an Air Force One, the president's personal plane, down, but he really means to take the entire plane down with him. The ideology behind it is simple as well: keeping the president safe from a shooting should anyone try to assassinate him, Oskari says. This includes flying him out of the country. To make a long story short, Jenny sets out for the president on skis, where she learns quickly that she is in way over her head. But she also resorts to cunning and makes it to Finland in one piece, which is where we meet the president.
Director Helander conveys all kinds of emotions in the film. Some of us feel a sudden rush of empathy for Oskari as the movie progresses. But Helander also hits us with the kind of violence killing our teenage spirit, as many action films do. It might not be the smartest or most moral approach to the assassination of the president, but it surely is one of the funniest ones. And even the president is as funny as Oskari. Nevertheless, the movie is also unbearably tense from the beginning. The main rivals are the two Russian KGB spies that try to find and kill the president. At the same time, the movie kicks into full force by having Oskari go on a rampage of his own, aided by a pair of strange bounty hunters. It is ridiculous, wild, hilarious and plain fun, making this movie a one-of-a-kind experience.
