Kannadasan wrote over 1500 songs, which have been recorded and performed by the music director T. M. Soundararajan. The two collaborated on about 15 films. Kannadasan wrote the lyrics for about 18 films including Mayabazar, Aaravadhi, Thayigagi, Kavadiyattam, Thaayin Madiyil and Kannukku Oru Pathiramanithan. He wrote lyrics for many more films, including Thiruda Thiruda, which was directed by M. S. Ramakrishnan and starred M. N. Nambiar, Jayalalithaa, Sivaji Ganesan and M. R. Radha. He was also known to write songs for films produced by other music directors, such as M. S.
Kannadasan was born in the village of Pungalampalayam, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu. He was the youngest of three children born to Subramania Iyer and P. T. Gnanam. His siblings were the poet Kambadasan, and the author Ku. Ma. Balasubramanian. Kannadasan's grandfather, Perumal Iyer, was one of the first writers of Tamil prose. Kannadasan spent his childhood in the village of Pungalampalayam. He learned classical music from his father. He started writing his lyrics in late childhood. He also learned how to play the violin. From a young age, Kannadasan was fascinated with the life of the street, and began to visit the streets in the village of Pungalampalayam. He created many songs with music by his favourite musician, T. M. Soundararajan. He entered college in 1936 and began to write more frequently. In 1939, Kannadasan married a girl named Sundari from a village in Perambalur district. She was the daughter of a teacher named Manickam. The couple had six children together: Kavitha, Chitra, Nagalakshmi, Susheela, Suresh, and Vidhi. Kannadasan's brother, Kambadasan, also became a poet in Tamil.
