Favreau's movie adopts the grim outlook of Van Allsburg's story. Perhaps that is why Jon Travis' soundtrack is a bit soupy and jowly, like a white tie commiserative without the panache and understated excitement of Alan Silvestri's soundtrack for "Jumanji" (1995). In the ending scene, a dark version of the house floats away into the night, and the only light is a planet floating through space, which its inhabitants regard as home. That is the only moment of real hope in the movie and the only moment that comes close to feeling as if we are in an optimistic alternative universe. Like the children who play it, we are pushed through the door into other worlds.

The Budwings, whose lives have been professionalized, appear to the family as spacemen who are just passing through.
